Risk

Interacting with Bitcoin involves operational, custodial, and market risks. Loss of private keys results in permanent loss of access. Malware, phishing, and physical theft of devices or backups are common vectors. Exchange or custodial platforms introduce counterparty risk; users who leave coins on such platforms depend on the operator’s solvency and controls.

Market price can decline substantially and for extended periods. Liquidity varies. Regulatory actions in specific jurisdictions can affect on-ramps, taxation, or the legality of certain activities. Protocol changes, while difficult to coordinate, remain possible. Users who self-custody assume responsibility for key management, backup, and inheritance planning.

None of these risks are unique to Bitcoin, but the combination of irreversible transactions and direct control of keys changes the distribution of responsibility. Education, careful operational practice, and an accurate assessment of one’s own threat model are the primary mitigations. The network itself does not provide recourse for user error or external compromise.
